Sekou Campbell
Educational Consultant
Sekou Campbell
earned a high school diploma from New York City's LaGuardia High School
of Performing Arts in 1993; a Bachelor of Science degree in Human &
Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University, as a Dean's Scholar,
in 1997; and a Master's of Fine Arts degree in Theater Arts from Columbia
University in 2002. As a member of the prestigious Teach for America corps
from 1997-1999, he taught mathematics in the South Bronx, raising students'
test scores in this underserved community both years. He then went on
to serve as a charter teacher at a new school, Bronx Charter School for
the Arts, in Hunts Point. This school has been featured in the Daily News,
New York Times, National Public Radio and various other major media outlets.
As the theater specialist, Sekou led and coordinated such shows as Hip
Hop Day (a homage to the artistic history of the South Bronx), Winter
and Spring Arts Festivals (highlighting student work) and even a 4th grade
production of Hamlet (in the original language).
Sekou is
a performer and has worked with such performers as Mos Def, Ice-T, Judd
Nelson and Mario Van Peebles. He maintains a healthy acting career as
a member of the world-renowned Great Jones Repertory Theater run by the
MacArthur genius, Ellen Stewart. He lives, breathes and loves the language
of the classic works most studied by students in high school.
